Rest In Peace
I believe
that sometimes you teach the lessons that you most need to learn. Over the past
month, I have sent this verse to several women who are go-getters, movers and
shakers—mothers, students, ministers, wives, caregivers—you know—women like you
and me. I also sent this to a client, after she had gone 48 hours without
sleep, so that she could finish a project. She said, “Wow! I think you just
told me off with scripture. I hate to see what The Message translation looks
like."
So, here
it is:
"If God doesn't
build the house, the builders only build shacks.
If God doesn't
guard the city, the night watchman might as well nap.
It's
useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to
the bone.
Don't
you know he enjoys giving rest to those he loves?"
Psalm 127:1–2
Wow,
indeed! When I read the translation this morning, I checked myself. As usual, I've been working hard—keeping house,
taking care of my son, running a business, being a wife, volunteering, and the
list goes on. But, only what I do for Him will last! He doesn't care if my
floors are spotless, that my laundry bin is empty, or that my son has new
clothes. Nor does He care about how much money I make or how busy my schedule
is. He cares about what I do for HIM...period!
Here I am
running around like the proverbial chicken with its head cut off, only to
realize that I am putting undue pressure on myself. Yes, He wants me to work
and take care of my family, but at the end of the day, He wants me to come to
Him and lay my burdens down.
I've
realized that I don't have to wait until I die to rest in peace. I can do it
right now—and so can you!
MIND: When you feel yourself becoming
overwhelmed, STOP—go to a bathroom, a conference room, or to a place where you
can be alone. Sit and meditate on Him until you regain your focus.
BODY: When you are feeling tired this
week, instead of reaching for a cup of coffee or tea, exercise for at least
five minutes. Get up and go for a short walk, hold on to the back of your chair
and do lunges, or walk on the treadmill for a few minutes. The release of
endorphins will energize you and help you to regain your focus.
SPIRIT:
Take a few minutes
and write down everything that you must accomplish this week. Prioritize
the list. Then, mark those items that feed your Spirit. If they aren't at the
top of your list—it's time to re-prioritize!
"Come
unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
